In Memory of our friend Jeff Stone (the Stoneman)
On Wednesday August 4, 2021 we lost our dear friend Jeff Stone. Jeff was instrumental in both the establishment of the Newburyport Gridiron Club and the Friends of Newburyport Hockey. These non-profits were designed to give back to the community and the programs Stoney loved, played and coached for. Jeff served as the NGC Vice President and was responsible for the fundraisers that continue to support the program today. Jeff was a humble and selfless individual who never wanted any credit or limelight. Even when forced to be on a payroll, Jeff always donated his stipend back to the program, often without anyone's knowledge. He kept extra equipment stored and donated to those who could not afford or access proper equipment and was always there for his players, coaches and teammates.
Jeff's legacy of charity, generosity and support will live on through both of these organizations for generations to come. Lastly, if you already do not, please consider donating blood and becoming an organ donor. 4414... We will miss you always. |

MORE ABOUT US
Over the past twenty plus years, the money raised through donations and fundraisers has provided the NHS football program with proper equipment and supplies to better the experience, safety and success of our team. Some of the purchases credited to these contributions are:
Helmets, Shoulder Pads and Football Equipment: These days every modern helmet costs between $300 and $500 with shoulder pads ranging from $200 to $300. Less and less of our sports mandatory equipment is being paid for by school funds. The NGC has been supplementing thousands of dollars to keep our student athletes in safe, modern equipment over the years.
Hudl Video: Hudl is a widely used video service that allows teams to share team video, scout opponents and review. Players have access to learn, study and create their own individual game tape for college scouting or personal memories. Hudl is used by many different sports teams and does not come cheap, however, it provides an invaluable teaching and learning tool to our football program.
Tackling Donuts: One of the growing concerns around player safety is head injuries. Tackling donuts provide a simulated runner and the ability to safely teach proper tackling technique without player to player contact.
Pre-season camps. Newburyport participated in the 7 on 7 tournament and the lineman challenge. These programs and camps are not cheap and the Clippers participants were sponsored by the Gridiron Club.
Training Chutes, which is a piece of equipment used in practice to promote proper body position and technique.
New jerseys and uniforms; Many people often comment how NHS always seems to have new uniforms and this is thanks to the Gridiron Club. These uniforms take a beating each season and the rips, wear and tear comes at a cost. These funds also allow our program to have these uniforms sent out for cleaning and repair each week, so you parents can be thankful that after a mud or rain soaked game, these sweaty, dirty, wet and stained uniforms are not coming home to your laundry room. This cleaning process also controls the outbreak of staph infection within our locker room (which is a serious problem in some athletic locker rooms).
The Gridiron has also purchased new camera equipment for filming games, including a telescoping end zone camera.
Also for game use, the Gridiron replaced the old headsets for on field communication and updated with state of the art all weather headsets for improved communication.
The Gridiron Club was one of the key sponsors for the end of the season break up dinner last year and continued to sponsor one of the annual awards for ‘character, clipper pride and quality play’ with the Gridiron Award. This past year, the NGC sponsored all of the awards (see more in our History Books section).
Field equipment and training bags. New tackling donuts and agility bags were also purchased to aid in player safety and development of technique and form.
Lastly, the Gridiron funds helped pay for spirit wear, shorts, shirts and gear that we outfit players with. These are just a few examples of how this money is spent and it is important to know that the needs are ongoing, so thank you for your support and please continue to help and spread the word.
