2019 Dedication: #22 Kevin Sullivan (NHS 76’)
In Memory of #22...
This past March, the Newburyport community lost one of its best in Kevin Sullivan (NHS 76’). Kevin was a huge supporter of everything NHS; a steadfast and devoted Clipper. While Kevin could be found in nearly any stands, no matter the sport; football was always at his core. During his time at NHS he excelled as a three sport student athlete, leading the Clippers to a football state championship in 1975 and compiling too many accolades, records and recognition's to be listed.
Once settling back in Newburyport after a stellar football career at UMass, Kevin raised a wonderful family alongside his wife and best friend Ellen (Bresnahan) Sullivan, another proud NHS graduate and former standout student athlete. Their children were born to be Clippers… with crimson and olde gold running through their veins and NHS memorabilia proudly displayed in almost every nook and cranny of their home.
In 1996, his first year of eligibility, Kevin was recognized by the NHS Wall of Fame and unanimously selected by the committee. While his achievements were many, Kevin was a modest, humble and a selfless gentleman who never boasted or bragged, always putting his team first.
“When I see the plaques on that wall and realize you’re going up there, it's a great feeling. I've always loved the Clipper colors, the stadium, the tunnel and those gold helmets. From the time I was eight years old, I knew I wanted to come out of that tunnel on Friday night and wear that gold helmet. … [I’d like to thank all of my former teammates], it was very rewarding to be a member of a great class with successful people on and off the field.”
-Kevin Sullivan
(To the Newburyport Daily News. 1996.)
While Kevin was a devoted father, husband and true family man, he was also generous with his time. He volunteered as a coach, he sponsored and gave to countless fundraisers supporting NHS athletics… and rarely missed any sporting event for decades.
The Friday night lights, a collegiate tailgating Saturday and a Patriots Sunday do not seem the same without Sully; his insight, his passion for life and his friendship will always be a part of the Clipper community who knew and loved him.
We miss you Kevin. This season’s for you.
Epilogue
The NHS football team would like to dedicate this season to number 22 Kevin Sullivan. Kevin will always be with us in spirit, but will be honored as a game captain during each game as his #22 jersey will be accompanying our captains for the coin toss each week. In addition, knowing how much that gold helmet meant, the number 22 will be with each player, on that gold helmet, all season.
